Northern Ladies 2010
Clitheroe Golf Club
CLITHEROE’S Emma Clegg was denied the chance to become the home-club heroine after a fantastic display at this week’s Northern Ladies Close Championship. The 19-year-old was pipped to the title after losing yesterday’s final by 2&1 to Cheshire’s rising star Brontë Law, while Yorkshire’s Steph Hall, 16, took the event’s Millennium Bowl as winner of the second flight knockout draw. In the semi-final stage of the tournament, Clegg defeated the 2009 runner-up, Accrington’s Nikki Foster, by 2&1, while Law defeated this year’s Lancashire Ladies champion Bethany Garton 6&5.
Bramhall member Law, 15, is fast becoming one of golf’s leading lights. She is the English U18 strokeplay champion and will represent England in the Girls’ Home Internationals. Last season, she won the North of England U16 championship – in which she beat a mixed field – the North of England schools’ championship, the Northern girls’ championship and the Cheshire girls’ title. This season, Law, who represents the English Women’s Golf Association U18 squad, also successfully defended her Andalucia Junior European Open girls’ title.
But for Clegg, the tournament represented a big success after enjoying a hole in one at the 17th hole during the strokeplay stage.
Competition was strong at Clitheroe, with over 35 lady golfers from Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cheshire and Northumberland vying for the title and the majority boasting handicaps of five or under.
